Understanding Anchors in Augmented Reality Experiences


Whenever you’re building augmented reality (AR) experiences, there is an important concept to understand: working with anchors. I will explore AR anchor kinds.
In VR, the consumer doesn’t find the real world so the programmer can “place” the student in any virtual location to start the experience. Together with AR, the student can observe the world that is actually in or via the device display. The device and the software stage need to understand something in the actual world and build the experience around that. Notably, in AR, the experience should know where to place the material (thus the title: anchor). The anchor triggers the experience.
How does this work?
Anchors are objects that AR applications can recognize, and they help solve the vital problem for AR programs: incorporating the actual and virtual worlds. AR programs (such as ARCore, ARKit, and Vuforia) approach this problem in different ways, but they all deal with the very same tasks: real-world detection and tracking.
AR platforms utilize functionalities dependent on the detectors in supported devices (mainly iOS, and Android but also head-up devices–HUDs–such as Microsoft HoloLens) to encourage environmental comprehension. This included tracking movement; and discovering the size and location, position, and orientation of surfaces, in addition to lighting requirements. The first sensors that AR uses to detect device locations relative to the environment are cameras.
This article is primarily concerned about iOS and Android apparatus, and not with the varieties of HUDs such as Google Glass in which the device functionality involves projecting information on a flat display but not imitating the material in the actual world.
Deciding the kind
The AR programmer decides which sort of anchor to utilize to start. There are many different kinds of AR anchors. Figure 1 shows the basic types as they look in Truth Composer, a program available for macOS and iOS, which allows developers and artists to build out realistic AR encounters. The type of anchors depends upon the tool in use. This article will not address the particulars of how to work with each anchor. It is going to explain each form.

Anchor kinds in Reality Composer
Picture anchor
The image anchor is one of the most commonly used types. This anchor permits you to associate a picture that is going to be in the actual world. The image could be even a billboard out in the real world, a printed sign in your workplace, or a magazine ad. Your image must offer enough detail to be recognizable: models distinct patterns, logos, text, or anything else that will assist your image sticks out.
You need a digital version of your image, and you use that in your development environment. (Figure 2) I utilized Figure 2 in a previous post if you want to find out how the image relates to the content. You then use the tool to develop the AR experience.

When the camera scans the image, the AR experience shows up on or around the image. The expertise moves with the image.
Plane anchors
There are three types of plane anchors: horizontal plane, vertical plane, and plane.

Airplane anchors
These anchors scan for a plane (ground or wall). Once that plane is located, the camera will build the AR experience on it. This could create a birds-eye perspective of a world the user can explore (Figure 4), or it could allow the user to place objects in the actual world, as the Ikea and Amazon programs do.

Face anchors
Another anchor in AR is the face foot or anchor tracker. Reality Composer and Spark AR may use this one. These tools utilize the person’s face as the tracker to build the experience.

You find the MeMoji attributes of Apple, and this used with media filters. When creating for this kind of quality, you are just given a face by Reality Composer. Spark AR permits you to get more in-depth about different types of looks.
3-D object anchors
One of my favorite anchors is the object anchor. This anchor allows the platform to detect a 3-D object and build the experience around that object that is 3-D. (Figure 6)

When working with objects, there are just two measures. Scan the object. Then import the scan into the tool. The environment will give the measurements of the object to the programmer, but some testing may be required by placing the experience around the purpose. (Figures 7 and 8)

One reason I love working with the Reality Composer and Adobe Aero app on my iPad is I can quickly see the purpose in real life and edit even while I know the purpose. This makes placing the AR content more comfortable to do.
When the anchor is made, the programmer uses an authoring tool such as Unity with Vuforia, Reality Composer by Apple, or Adobe Aero to write and edit what happens about that anchor. The programmer determines what’s near the anchor, what is away and what even circles or overlaps the anchor.
There might be other kinds of anchors based upon your tool, but these are the most common ones. Knowing these anchors is the very first step in the building experience. This is the difference between creating versus creating for VR, for AR. You work with the same content, but around these anchors that you build your experience with AR.
